Sleep And Rest make you your Best!

Why do we need sleep? We tend to think of sleep as the time for our mind and body to shut down, when sleep actually helps the body to recover and heal. Make sleep a high priority! According to the National Sleep Foundation, staying awake for 18 hours straight is equivalent to a blood alcohol level of 0.05 (the legal blood alcohol level is 0.08!) which makes it hard to focus, hard to make decisions, and could possibly harm yourself and others.

Some ways to make sleep better are to:

  • Stick to a sleep schedule, including the weekends where you go to bed and wake up the same times.
  • Create a bedtime ritual for yourself like listening to calm music, using candles as calming light or using a low watt light bulb in a lamp
  • Turn off and refrain from using all electrical devices an hour before bed
  • Read a light-content (or dare I say something – “boredom-inducing”) book
  • Meditated or listen to a guided meditation audio

There may be days when we can’t help ourselves from missing a few hours of sleep and that’s when naps can be very beneficial. Naps between 10-20 minutes can make you feel refreshed, but any longer can create grogginess and continue to throw off sleep patterns.
