5 Key New Years Resolutions to be Healthy... Number One!

Number 1 = Exercise!

Two people running in a parkThere are 5 Keys to getting healthy and staying healthy and now is a great time to start.  The 5 are… Exercise, Proper Nutrition, Restful Sleep, Positive Mental Attitude, and a Healthy Nervous System(Chiropractic).

We will discuss these one at a time, today’s topic is EXERCISE.

Exercise not only helps the body but helps the brain too! The American Heart Association recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise daily! That’s one episode of ‘Friends’ while on the treadmill! Some great ways to incorporate exercise in your day would be taking a walk during your lunch break. Parking your car further from your building. Instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs! Not only will it help your body, but it will also help lower your stress levels. Had a difficult day with your boss at work? Had an ugly confrontation with your spouse/friend/family member? Take a boxing class and let that aggression out! Feeling tense in the shoulders and back? Try a yoga class and gain some flexibility!

Exercise reduces stress levels, helps aide in sleep, improves cardiovascular health, and makes you more functional in life.  Your body wants motion!

Here are a few rules of thumb.

  • Every little bit counts. Don’t wait until you have an hour to exercise.
  • Participate in a cardio-related exercise for at least an hour a day. Even if broken into short segments. (Walking, riding a bike, etc.)
  • Participate in strength training exercise a minimum of three times per week.
  • Don’t forget about stretching. Be sure to warm up and then stretch prior to starting your exercise routine.
